Founded in 1887, Tarpon Springs was the first official city on the Pinellas peninsula. The name of the city was inspired by the tarpon, a fish found in abundance off the coast. It has become one of the most sought after game fish in the world. Sponges were discovered in the Florida Keys during the 1820s. By 1900, Tarpon Springs was considered the largest sponge port in the United States. Greek sponge divers came to Tarpon Springs in 1905 establishing a unique Mediterranean heritage. Today, tourism has replaced sponging as Tarpon Springs’ major economic activity. Visitors come to Tarpon Springs to enjoy outdoor activities, visit the Sponge Docks, and experience Greek culture and cooking at restaurants serving traditional Greek meals and wonderful pastries. The Sponge Docks, with over 15 restaurants and 100 shops, have something for everyone. Other activities available are sightseeing cruises, live sponge diving exhibitions, deep-sea fishing, and tours of the aquarium and sponge museum. Tarpon Springs is also known for its Performing Arts Center, Cultural Center, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, and Safford House.
Community is a big part of life in Tarpon Springs. Community events and festivals include the Downtown Tarpon Springs Festival of Arts, the Bayou Boat Parade, the annual Epiphany Celebration, Greek Fest, and Taste of Tarpon Springs. The old downtown hosts many more cultural events, parades and celebrations each year. Bicyclists, joggers, skaters and walkers have access to Pinellas Trail that winds through town. Sunset Beach is a favorite spot for barbeques, picnics and boating. Four other parks are located throughout the city offering fishing, windsurfing, children’s play areas, and facilities for softball, volleyball, soccer, and more. With 26 public golf courses in and around Tarpon Springs, there are courses available for every playing ability. Tarpon Springs’ residents can easily enjoy all the cultural arts, sports (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and restaurants that Tampa has to offer without giving up the feel of beach community living. |
